sankar's 'I' risk the transgender community

Despite mixed reviews, Vikram-Amy Jackson starrer I has been enjoying it’s stint at box office, thanks to overwhelming response from fans. While the film is basically a love story between Vikram and Amy, director Shankar’s attempt to form a love triangle, by including a transgender stylist in the picture, seems to have gone awry.

In the film, transgender, played by popular make-up artist Ojas M Rajani, falls for Vikram and then plots for his downfall, when Vikram mocks his love. The way the stylist lusts over Vikram has not gone down well with transgender community. “We want Shankar to remove those scenes from the film. It belittles our community and we plan to lodge an official complaint on Monday with the police. If required, we don’t even mind taking the legal recourse,” said popular transgender TV personality Rose Venkatesan.

“The way Shankar has portrayed Ojas’s character makes us look like some sex-starved individuals. We are in talks with the members of LGBT community to decide the next course of action,” added Rose. Also many intellects have raised eyebrows on the way a sensitive topic involving a transgender’s feelings was dealt in a cringe inducing way. On Saturday, a group of transgenders staged a protest in front of Shankar’s house.
While the LGBT community is demanding for removal of these scenes, it seems unlikely that the makers would succumb to the protests as those sequences are pivotal for film’s narrative flow.
